BLACK-MILK Mix Vol.1 X OPTIK
08.15.10

Our First Mix is from a close and very talented friend of ours who goes by the name of OPTIK. A fellow lover of most things DUB Optix has been producing tracks for a while now, a couple of which have been aired on the infamous RINSE.FM in recent months. OPTIK has really done us proud for our first mix a great 30 minute mix of dubstep. one im sure you will all enjoy. We asked him a few questions

“My names Nathan Spooner aka OPTIK. I’m 22, from Birmingham, been living in London now for about a year. I started teaching myself guitar and piano at the age of 16 so I was a pretty late starter musically. I attended Birmingham Conservatoire where i studied composition and production, then moved to London to go to uni. I was brought up on a real mix of shit from old Peter Tosh and Beres Hammond to Frank Sinatra and everything in between. I got into dubstep after a mate played me the opening track from Dubstep AllStars Vol 1, Kode9 – Babylon… HUGE! Since then I’ve been writing all sorts of music, then finally decided to try and release some, which leads me to where I am now.”
How did you put the mix together?
“Basically I wanted this mix to contain all the best elements of new dubstep. I’m not really a fan of all this new filthy dubstep, some tunes are aight but i just dont get the hype with most of it. I wanted it to be a reflection of where dubstep came from and where it’s heading. In my opinion it’s kinda come full circle now. First we had the deep experimental vibes of Kode 9, burial, early Skream, then it got bigger and bigger, more distorted. Now some of the best new music is reflecting the styles of them early artists. So yeah, this mix has got the hard stuff people love to skank out to and the mellow vibes for the deep dub heads out there.”
Whats your favorite track on the mix and why?
“Apart from my own tunes?! Hah! I dunno man, it’s a hard one. I chose all of them tracks cos’ I think they are big. James Blake – CMYK is such a good track, everything about it is near perfect. It makes me wanna play it on repeat, it inspires me, perfect track. Vishnu – Shelter is another huge chillout dub track. I must say though the Foreign Beggars tune Typhoon is HUGE. Always gets people skankin’. I’d say they were my top 3…Favourite track though… CMYK.”
“Erm, I hope people like the mix, tell all your mates about it. Promoters get in touch; I just wanna play as much as I can. Big up to the Black Milk boys. PEACE”
